CITY APPROVES INDOOR VELODROME

World Class facility also serves as community centre

EDMONTON, AB – Cyclists and active Edmontonians celebrated Wednesday evening following a victory at City Council approving the re-development of Edmonton’s Argyll Velodrome. The new Velodrome, an indoor facility complete with a flexible-use, all season sports field, fitness centre and walking/running track will be ready for use as early as 2010.

The Argyll Velodrome Association, a non-profit organization that has operated the facility for the past 13 years, began the process of creating the redevelopment concept more than three years ago. Work included traffic studies, environmental impact assessments and public consultations. Ultimately the project was recommended to council by Edmonton’s Community Services division.

The redeveloped Argyll Velodrome, when completed, will serve as an active living centre for area residents and it will be one of only two world-class indoor Velodromes in North America. Having an indoor Velodrome will allow Edmonton to bid for a variety of high profile sporting events. The next step in the process for the AVA’s volunteer committee is raising the funds required to build the centre. The current estimated cost for the project is $30 million.

-The track was dry, then it snowed, now it's almost dry.

-Schools are starting to make their way to the track so keep checking the calendar for times and dates of the bookings.

-It has been a busy two weeks at the clubhouse because of all the camera crews from most the tv networks in the city coming by.

-Thanks to all the volunteers who took time out of their saturday afternoon a few weeks ago and cleared the track of all the snow.

This Saturday (22 March ) a group 'go getter' cyclists are getting together to shovel the snow off of the track. If you can, come on down in the afternoon and join us in our on going battle with the snow. Contact Maciej at the clubhouse if you would need some more information. Look forward to seeing you.

We are in need of volunteers to work our next casino.

The dates are August 28 & 29, 2008.

The Casino will be held at the Baccarat Casino, 101 street & 104^th Avenue.
